The pension plan provides you and your family with financial security in old age and in case of injury/ death.
Everyone who lives in Japan over 20 and under 65 years old of age is obligated to join the pension system (National or Employee or dependant).
National Pension premium is ¥13,860 per month (as of 2007) regardless of one’s income or age.
If you are having difficulty paying the premium because of the financial reason, consult us. You may qualify to full exempt or half exempt if your income is limited.
If you are student, you will be able to extend your payment.
Request is necessary and if it is approved, you will receive notice in the mail.
If you are Japanese national who resides overseas and wish to join the National Pension System, you are eligible to do so.

Please notify us in following cases…
- When one reached 20 and has not joined Employee’s Pension (Kousei Nenkin)...
- notify us at National Pension Division (Kokumin Nenkin-ka)
- When one joined Employee’s Pension or Mutual Aid Association at work…
- inquire your workplace.
- When one left the Employee’s Pension or Mutual Aid Association…
notify us at National Pension Division (Kokumin Nenkin-ka) or Citizens’ Affairs Division (Shimin-ka).
Please bring the loss of qualification certificate (Shikaku Shousitu Shoumei-sho), appointment letter of resignation (Taishoku Jirei), and optional continual insurance certificate (Ninni Keizoku Hoken-sho).
- When dependent was not under the aliment of the spouse…
- notify us at National Pension Division (Kokumin Nenkin-ka) or Citizens’ Affairs Division (Shimin-ka). Please bring the paper that proofs date of discharge.
- When one changed address…
- Please bring seal, National Pension Certificate (Nenkin Shousho) and notify us at National Pension Division (Kokumin Nenkin-ka).
- When one who were receiving pension passed away…
- bring seal and contact us at National Pension Division (Kokumin Nenkin-ka).
Benefits
Even you are eligible to receive benefit, it will NOT be provided until you requested.
Requirements are different depending on the benefits.
Please consult us for details.
- Basic Pension for the Elderly:
It will be provided when member reach 65 years old and joined the pension system minimum of 25 years.
The term will include the years member paid pension premium (including Employee’s Pension, KOUSEI NENKIN and Mutual Aid Association, KYOUSAI KUMIAI) and years of exemption.
- Basic Pension for the Disabled:
It will be provided when member became disabled (designated by National Pension Law, 1st and 2nd degree).
If disabled person is under the 20 years of age, Youth Basic Pension for the Disabled will apply.
- Basic Pension for the Bereaved:
When member deceased, it will be provided to spouse and children under age of 18 (until the fist March 31st when children reach the age of 18 and for disabled children, pension will be provided until children reach age of 20.)
- Widow’s Pension:
- When husband who is qualified to receive the Basic Pension for the Elderly deceased without receiving the pension, it will be provided to the wife (must be married with him over 10 years) from 60 to 65 years old.
- Lamp Sum Payment for the Bereaved:
- When member paid premium more than 3 years and deceased without receiving pension, lamp sum payment will be provided to the bereaved family.
Lamp Sum Withdrawal Refund (Dattai Ichiji Kin)

*If you are temporary resident, there is a Lamp Sum Withdrawal Refund System called DATTAI ICHIJI-KIN(脱退一時金).
To be eligible for the refund, you must meet following requirements and apply within two years of leaving Japan.
(If you are member of Employee’s Pension, premiums are automatically deducted from your salary along with your social insurance.
However, procedure is same as National Pension.
Please ask details at your work or contact the Social Insurance Office
- You must not possess Japanese citizenship.
- You must have paid Pension Insurance Premiums for six months or more.
- You must not have a place of residence in Japan.
- You must not receive pension benefits (including Disability Allowance).
For filing the Lump Sum Withdrawal Refund, one must obtain the claim form, “Claim Form for the Lump-sum Withdrawal Payment”(Dattai Ichijikin Saitei Seikyu-sho 脱退一時金裁定請求書) from National Pension Division counter or Social Insurance Office (If you are member of Employee’s Pension).
After filling the application, applicant must send it to the address below with following documents.
Application must be made within 2 years of leaving Japan.
Documents
- 1: Pension Book (Nenkin Techou 年金手帳)
- 2: A photocopy of your passport (your name, date of birth, nationality, signature, and the date of departure from Japan)
- 3: A document verifying the name of your bank, bank account number in your name, branch office and its address.

Refund that transfer to your account will be calculated base on exchange rate of the transfer date.
*According to the Japanese law, 20% of refund will be deducted as income tax.
However, you could receive a tax refund upon the request.
