Following are the benefits of National Health Insurance.

Two years is the statute of limitation for refund, please apply before expires. 

Certain treatments are not listed under coverage of National Health Insurance. 

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us for details (enquiries in Japanese only).

  • Members will only pay 30% of total cost when consult a doctor.
  • When child is born…
    • a member or dependent will receive birth expenses (Shussan Ikuji  Ichijikin 出産育児一時金) of ¥350,000 per child. 

      Please check the “Provision of Birth Expense” for details.

  • When member/dependent passed away…
    • National Health Insurance will provide ¥25,000 for person who held funeral as funeral expense.
  • When member/dependent paid high medical expense…
    • due to hospitalization, the amount borne by a member/dependent exceeds the standard amount (standard amount depends on person’s income and frequency), the excess portion will be reimbursed upon the request. 

      Applicant who met all requirements will receive the notice 4 months later.

  • When medical expense is too high and member cannot afford it…
    • National Health Insurance offers “High Medical Expense Assistance (Loan) System.”

      Instead of reimbursing later, this system pays the excess portion.

      However, if applicants are delinquent in payment without any specific reason, this system will not apply.

  • Reduction of meal charge during hospitalization…
    • if member /dependents are exempt from citizen tax or over 70 years old and low-income household, they could request for reduction of meal charge (260 yen per meal). 

      If request is approved, meal charge will be reduced.

  • When member/dependent received medical treatment abroad…
    • member/dependent should submit the required paper to the counter when returned to Japan.

      If request is approved, portion of the medical expense will be reimbursed. 

      Please bring the copy of Detail of Medical Treatment (Shinryou Naiyou Meisai-Sho 診療内容明細書) when traveling abroad.

      The Detail of Medical Treatment is placed at National Health Insurance counter.

  • When medical expense is unaffordable due to the disaster…
    • if member’s income dropped temporary due to the disaster and medical expense is unaffordable, National Health Insurance will cover the portion or extend the payment of medical expense.

Reduction of National Health Insurance Fee

  • Hokenzei no Gengaku/
  • 保険税の減額

National Health Insurance Fee will be reduced for households that do not reach the minimum income level stated by the government. 

But if household had not filed the final tax return (Kakutei Shinkoku), government could not judge whether household meets the qualification or not, and fee would not be deducted. 

Do not forget to file your final tax return!

  1. Apply to Reduction

    When member of the National Health Insurance is having difficulty to pay the fee due to disaster, unemployment or ill, the member might qualify for the exemption or reduction of the fee. 

  2. But period for accepting application is limited. 

  3. Please contact Health Insurance Taxation Group (Hokenzei Gurupu) in National Health Insurance Division for details (enquiries in Japanese only)

  4. Papers that prove damage of disaster, recent incomes, or status of unemployment are necessary to apply. 

  5. There are various situations qualify to reduction, so please consult us as soon as possible.
