Provision of Birth Expense—Member of National Health Insurance

  • 出産育児一時金の支給、国民健康保健加入者/
  • Shussan Ikuji Ichijikin no Shikyuu, Kokuho Kanyuusha
notice

Pregnancy is a special case in all categories of insurance.

Japanese health insurance DOES NOT cover the cost of normal maternity and obstetric (pre-and post-natal) care since normal pregnancy and birth is not considered as illness.

However, it does cover cesarean and other complicated birth procedures.

When a member or dependent of National Health Insurance delivers a baby, birth expenses (Shussan Ikuji Ichijikin 出産育児一時金) of ¥350,000 will be provided.

How to apply

You must be the member (or dependent) of National Health Insurance

If the applicant delivers a baby within 6 month after leaving social health insurance, birth expenses will be provided by social health insurance, not from National Health Insurance.

The definition of “childbirth” is delivering 85days after the pregnancy, includes miscarriage and stillborn.

Application must be made within the two years from delivering the baby.

Head of household or attorney could apply at Citizens’Affairs Division, Main Office between 8:30-18:00 or Each Branch Office, 8:30-17:00.

  • Applicant must bring
    • Birth Certificate (or Death Certificate, in case of stillborn)
    • National Health Insurance Card (Hoken-sho 保険証)
    • Seal(Inkan 印鑑) of householder and attorney.
    • Bankbook of head of householder or dependent (the one who gave a birth).
